So today on my lunch hour I was walking through Dupont Circle. It was a cold day and we've had our first snow of the year. More like slush, actually. But anyway, in front of the CVS were five topless gals, each covered head to toe in a single color of body paint, with a matching wig, so the five of them made a sort of rainbow. They were demonstrating for PETA! The first one I've actually seen, though I've read about various staged PETA actions in the media. In front of themselves they held a sign that said something about how Mars Candy abuses animals. (You can Google it for the details...basically more awful animal testing).
Being a well-conditioned city dweller, I was opening my purse all ready to give them money -- but there was no bucket or other way to do so. (The homeless guy nearby was bumming out because they were getting all the attention from passersby). I gave them the thumbs-up and said I hoped they would be able to get warm soon. One of them gave a great response, right on message: she said "Well, we have a choice to be here doing this. This discomfort is nothing compared to what the animals experience, and they don't have a choice."
I thought that was really cool.

Re: Amusing PETA protest
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 5:43 PMThat company has more money than god.
I did not know that they were running painful tests on animals. What for? Candy bars. These have been around forever too.
I used to buy their product but will boycott them. -

Sat, January 19, 2008 - 7:48 AMYeah, I was surprised that a candy company would need to test anything on animals, because the ingredients have all been around for so long...sugar, chocolate, etc. What more would chemists need to know?? But of course there are a lot of additives.
One of the articles I read suggested that they were probably testing something about flavonoids. Maybe because nowadays companies keep trying to market chocolate as a health food, touting its antioxidant benefits, etc. Gimme a break...when I choose to eat chocolate, I'm eating it for pleasure, plain and simple! -

Re: Amusing PETA protest
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 8:51 PMwell, I was visiting the hospital abotu a month ago, and there are vending machines selling candy and pop on every floor. And something caught my eye, as I was sitiing there. I stood up and looked closely to make sure.
and yes, it was true. The mars bar was identified as a power bar...it ain't a candy bar no more ;-)
